about

October 7th marks the release of Joey Altruda’s tour de force album, Joey Altruda Presents: El Gran Fellove, featuring legendary Cuban Jazz singer El Gran Fellove (pronounced Fay-oh-vay).

Fellove was a key figure in the development of a musical genre from Cuba known as Filin (phonetic for Feeling) in the 1940’s and 50’s. The style fused Afro-Cuban rhythms with the harmonic depth of BeBop, scat singing, and torch songs. Artists such as Omara Portuondo (of Buena Vista Social Club) , Chico O’Farrill, and Israel “Cachao” Lopez were main proponents of this experimental movement.

Altruda initially became aware of Fellove through actor Matt Dillon, who has been collecting Cuban records for the past 30 years. Together they were able to locate El Gran Fellove in Mexico City where he had been living since he left Cuba in 1955.

Recorded in the fall of 1999 in Mexico City, Joey Altruda Presents: El Gran Fellove, features a band of young trailblazing Cuban expat musicians (including a guest appearance by the iconic Cuban trumpeter Chocolate Armenteros) who had been Fellove’s band at the time. Considering he had not recorded anything since 1979, Fellove’s performances are exceptional.

“He was a one of a kind performer,” Altruda recalled. “His talent, charisma and originality were on the scale of Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, or even Michael Jackson.”

What was initially a one-off album, with songs written by Altruda and Fellove, as well as some favorites of the artist, quickly expanded into a feature length documentary with Dillon filming the event and telling the story of the Filin movement and Fellove’s deep involvement in its creation. The production itself took many twists and turns, years passed by, and the album sat unreleased awaiting the completion of the film (which is currently being shopped for distribution).
